This is the first time I've actually ripped vinyl for this blog. I think it sounds pretty good. And it was easy with this six track EP that's hardly over 5 minutes.
Society of the Spectacles is, at least by name and image, modeled after Guy Debord's 1967 series of theses The Society of the Spectacle-- a Marxist book on the degradation and replacement of society and social life with its own image as a sort of drugging and distracting tactic largely on the government's behalf. Basically a really hip French book with a really cool looking cover and a now classic counter culture message.
It's a classic Los Angeles area punk band thing to do to both have an underlying reference to anti consumerism and at the same time have a great sense of humor and play fast as fuck. Another way that this 7" seems like a punk rock modern classic to me is the performance; it reminds me of X in that they've put forth the effort into writing fully developed songs with great hooks and good melodies but play with as much aggression, conviction, and attitude as any other bonehead hardcore punk band. They're creative and at the same time listenable, and on top of it all there's an excellent Minutemen cover. And a final confirmation that this is Southern California punk at its finest is the label: We're From the Beach Records (with a Manhattan Beach address).
TRACK LIST
- Tootsie Roll Pop Art
- Dance Marathon
- Paranoid Chant (Minutemen)
- Ladies Wear White
- Kamikaze Limo

This band is defunct. I found this for 3 dollars at a record store, keep your eyes peeled.

I used to go see Rock Goggle Fantasy back when they were known as II Minute Hate. (This was about 2000-2002)
I made it my new years' resolution to go see more live shows. Rock Goggle Fantasy/II Minute Hate are the biggest influence on the way I perceive live shows. Possibly the best experiences of my youth were going to their live shows.
Their early stuff was the best; I'm sifting through my CDs to try and find it.
That's awesome to hear! I had heard about II Minute Hate before, but never heard it. The singer also played bass in Heavy Face with Freddy Ruppert and Josh from Foot Foot. Did you ever see Le Joshua? That was another South Bay band I really loved.
Oh and please post a link to whatever music you can find!
I'm uploading the Two Minute Hate - Two Minute Hate album right now.
Yeah, my friend Ben was the bassist of Le J. I saw them a couple of times. I really wanted to beat up Joey (the singer) at this one show - motherfucker got in my face for moshing during some song he didn't feel it was appropriate to mosh to.
Here's the album, but it's also coupled with your album (cause I uploaded it for a friend). Enjoy, this stuff is gold!

HOLY SHIT, that live show at suzys was the first time I ever bought weed! Todd (guitarist) sold it to us (12 years old) and my friends older brother got sketched out by seeing a cop and he put all our weed in his mouth! FAR FUCKIN OUT
Hey! Thank you for the kind words about the goggles. In case you want to hear it, heres a link to some unreleased rock goggle stuff. One of the tracks is a version of Are You Scared, recorded at the Society of the Spectacles session that never made the 7". The other 4 were also recorded with Dan Maier, he does great work, but we never really found any way to release it at the time. If theres any interest, I could also UL the FIREMACHINE recordings, a really fun band that was kinda a bizarro RGF. enjoy!
